While California is by far the most populated state in the U.S, the state’s crime rate is about on par with the national average, with certain cities reporting much lower incidents of crime than the national average. In fact, 42 of California’s 50 safest cities (84 percent) reported no murders, and the safest city on the list, Hillsborough, reported no incidents of violent crime whatsoever.
